Movement vs Exercise

Today, we’ll explore the power of Movement Snacks—small, everyday actions that can transform how your body feels. We’ll also look at how making fewer daily decisions can help you save energy for the things that matter most.

Why Movement is Essential and Exercise Optional

After years of exploring movement, I’ve come to believe that the best way to stay strong and flexible is to move often—using your body throughout the day in natural, practical ways. Walking, squatting, carrying, stretching—these small movements build lasting strength and mobility. Structured exercise 1–3 times a week is great, but think of it as a top-up, not the foundation.

“I don’t have time to exercise”—I’ve heard it before, and I’ve said it myself! That’s why, when life gets busy (and it often does), I rely on one simple strategy: adding movement snacks into everyday tasks. These little bursts keep me active, even on packed days. Whether I’m tidying, working, or out and about, I look for quick ways to sneak in more movement.

For example:

  • Standing on one leg while brushing your teeth

  • Doing a few squats while waiting for the kettle to boil

  • Taking the stairs two at a time

Here’s a great video from one of my favourite authors, Katy Bowman, where she explains why frequent movement—not just exercise—is essential for our long-term health and well-being. She talks about the difference between being “sedentary active” and truly physically active throughout the day.

Something to Try

Tomorrow, try counting how many movement snacks you can come up with during your day. Use your creativity and imagination—let yourself play with this task.

The most important part of being physically healthy is exploring different movement patterns and not getting stuck in just one. It’s a simple concept, but building it into daily life takes a bit of practice. You’ve got this.
